"Pawsing" for Tradition

Sep 12, 2011 | Category: Notes from the Bakery

Traditions. So comforting, aren’t they?

A few weeks back, before my youngest son went back to college, I spent the day with my three children, Lauren, Irvy and Jake, at the Philadelphia Zoo. That day I was reminded of just how lucky we are to live so close to this wonderful place, and how it has become a part of my family’s history.

While the four of us spent the day acting like kids, I was taken back to the times almost two decades ago when I’d bring this same brood to the same Zoo, three little versions of the wonderful people they are today. While their wide-eyed animal questions and seemingly incessant requests for ice pops and balloons are a thing of the past—well, at least the balloon part—it felt like old times again as we visited the polar bears and our other favorite exhibits.

What’s even more special is that I spent days here with my own parents. On the rare occasion when they’d take a break from their work at the bakery, the Zoo was our escape. As a Philadelphia girl, I have truly grown up with the Philadelphia Zoo. It’s become an important part of my family tradition.

As our way of saying, “Thanks for all the memories,” we’ve devoted this month’s store window to a display of wild animal-themed goodies, and are collecting donations to help the Philadelphia Zoo. We’ll match the amount donated by our customers.

So crawl, creep, or scamper by the bakery to check out this month’s window, on display until October 2.
